The modern home is an epitome of comfort, with airconditioners, carpets, upholsteries, drapes and generous bed spreads. Unfortunately, doctors have also linked these items of fine living with asthma, rhinitis (hay fever or persistent blocked nose), and eczema. AllergiesAllergies to irritants at home, called allergens, are often the cause of these illnesses. The most common allergen by far is the house dust mite, which thrives in hot, humid climates. They grow rapidly in the home environment, particularly in areas like the bed, carpets and upholstery. |

It is no wonder then that asthma incidence are highest in the more developed countries in the world. Allergies have been called the disease of rich countries. Other illnessesThe airtight home (which is a byproduct of an airconditioned home) means that many irritants and contaminants are recirculated in the rooms, much like water in a fish tank. These contaminants may be submicron particulate matter, bioaerosols like germs, or gases. Carpets, new furniture, nail polish removers are common household items that offgas chemicals into the air. Such environments are also conducive for illnesses like vasomotor rhinitis, headaches, and eye irritations. Whilst it may not be practical to do away with the comforts of home, we do not have to resign ourselves to an unhealthy lifestyle. Fortunately, there are things that we can do to make our homes healthier. These include air purifiers that keep the air clean, anti-mite bedding that protect against dust mite allergens, and allergy vacuums that keep our home surfaces clean. In buying these equipment though, it is important to ensure that the products have adequate independent medical backing. There is a wide difference in the performance and benefits of various equipment. |
